South Eastern Australia, Australia
Deen De Bortoli created his Vat Series with the idea of developing a range of delicious, full-flavoured wines at an affordable price. Deen personally selected the blends and chalked the numbers on the vats to identify them. The Vat Series includes traditional varietal wines and also wines made from interesting, newer varieties to Australia.
De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The couple emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the historic town of Asolo. Their son, the energetic and dynamic Deen De Bortoli, (b 1936 – d 2003) expanded and consolidated the business created by his parents. Deen's children established De Bortoli's reputation for premium wines.
The appearance is a deep purple with a crimson red hue, and has a bouquet of ripe blackberries and dark fruits complemented with mocha oak, hints of spicy pepper and liquorish. The palate is rich upfront primary fruit with ripe blackberries and hints of plums. Soft mouth coating tannins, hints of mocha, spice and liquorish with a chocolaty finish. As the wine is produced from a wide range of regions, such as the cool climate of the Central Ranges, to warm climate of Heathcote, the cool Limestone Coast in SA and then also the cooler regions of Port Phillip and King Valley in Victoria, therefore the seasonal vintage conditions can vary substantially between each region.
